Small businesses and startups need fast growth and solid customer acquisition to stay in the game and to distinguish themselves from competition. While some organizations try to hire marketing professionals who can juggle multiple priorities, it is difficult to manage all the activities required to establish and build out a strategic marketing plan to support the business. Outsourcing these activities helps speed the process.
The Magic Unicorn
Founders realize the importance of digital marketing, but often expect the marketing manager to be experts at everything: marketing strategy, web development, SEO, PPC, analytics, content creation, social media, sales support, designers, and more! (Right?!)
One wouldn’t expect a single contractor to build a home with just one person – an architect would design the project, another team would lay the foundation and yet another to build the structure. And then more people to install the electricity, plumbing, painting, landscaping, etc. It’s just not feasible for one person to do everything – there is a reason my these jobs are assigned to an expert.
Chances are as a startup you are totally overwhelmed with all the tasks necessary to run your business. You need to be focused on developing your MVP, the value you bring to your customers and your finances. There are often not enough resources to approach your branding, website, and content in the ways that are needed.
There are a lot of reasons why businesses choose to outsource their marketing, especially in the early stages:
- Small company or recently founded startup and budgets are small
- Small company with a marketing team, but lack resources, skills and experience
- Need outside advice or an external point of view
- Have past failures, and need fresh ideas and approaches for success
A better approach would be to outsource those activities until the company is large enough to bring on the additional resources necessary to manage those projects.
Often, startups look for contractors and agencies to help with:
- Website design
- Branding and logo design
- Social media management
- Content creation (blog posts, videos, case studies, collateral)
- Event management (webinars, in person/virtual events)
Why Outsourcing Makes Sense
- Work with experts in their respective fields. Having a specialist to manage specific business initiatives helps keep the work focused on their individualized niche. They have experience with tools within their niche as well as the experience of working with many projects and types of clients which can help bring new solutions and ideas to your marketing strategy. With experts, you get expert results. With a DIY approach comes that “works for now” mentality.
- Get high quality results in less time. Outsourcing to experts that are likely to have skills in the newest applications will help keep projects moving faster. Plus, they won’t be inundated with a million other priorities competing for their time. Expert marketing professionals can flex and scale with your company, often for less than the cost of a full employee once you consider benefits, necessary tools, and training.
- Less meetings. There’s one thing that kills progress and productivity – its meetings. Every contractor or agency is different, but most will have a weekly meeting to discuss progress, changes, and keep up to date with each other. Other than that, the time will be spent getting the initiative accomplished.
- Time to focus on your customers and their needs. Your entire business model should operate around your customers and how you can provide the most value possible. It takes time to invest in your MVP and potential improvements that can set your business apart from the competition.
- Get an outside perspective on your business. An outside perspective or opinion from somebody working with your business is invaluable information that you should treat with importance. There is less emotional attachment and bias to influence decisions. Having a fresh perspective enables your company to better shape your company’s image to prospective clients.
Regardless of whether your marketing department requires additional firepower – or you do not have a marketing team at all, outsourcing your marketing can help position your company to grow quickly.
